UV Index
A simple scale for a fast-changing risk.
UV and heat are different hazards. A cool or breezy day can still have high UV.
0–2
Low
Limited UV exposure for most people.
3–5
Moderate
Use sun protection during extended exposure.
6–7
High
Reduce unprotected midday exposure.
8–10
Very high
Seek shade and use strong sun protection.
11+
Extreme
Avoid unprotected exposure.
Why the hourly value matters
The daily maximum does not describe an entire outing. UV commonly peaks near solar noon and can remain meaningful on cool or cloudy days. Compare the expected start, middle and finish of your activity.
Use layers of protection
Shade, protective clothing, a hat, sunglasses and broad-spectrum sunscreen work together. Reflection from water, sand or snow can increase exposure.
